Research Procedures
If you agree to participate in this research, we would like to conduct an interview of approximately one hour with questions pertaining to your experiences as a leader, your participation in leadership programs, and your perspective on development in Africa.
With your permission, we will audiotape or videotape the interview and take notes during the interview. The taping is to accurately record the information you provide, and will be used for transcription purposes. If you choose not to be taped, we will take notes instead. If you agree to being taped but feel uncomfortable at any time during the interview, we can turn off the recorder at your request. Or, if you don’t wish to continue, you can stop the interview at any time.
We expect to conduct only one interview; however, follow- up interviews may be needed for added clarification. If so, we will contact you by email or phone to request this. Follow-up interviews will be conducted at a time and place of your choosing. Additional questions will relate to topics requiring additional clarification.
Your rights
Your participation in this research is voluntary. You are free to decline to take part in the project. You can decline to answer any questions and are free to stop taking part in the project at any time. Whether or not you choose to participate in the research and whether or not you choose to answer a question or continue participating in the project, there will be no penalty to you or loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled.
Benefits and Compensation
There is no direct benefit to you for participating in this research but we hope that this study will contribute to the understanding of the experiences of African youth and the role of education in shaping the rising generations of African leadership.
You will not be paid for participating in this study. There will be no costs to you besides your time.
Risks and Confidentiality
As with all research, there is a chance that confidentiality could be compromised; however, we are taking precautions to minimize this risk.
Your study data will be handled as confidentially as possible. If the results of this study are published or presented, individual names and other personally identifiable information will not be used. Audio and photographic recordings will be stored on a password-protected and encrypted personal computer, cloud storage, and external hard-drive.
Our research team will have sole access to the data collected. If information from this study is published or presented at scientific meetings, we will not use your name and other personal information without your consent. After this research is completed, we may save the recordings and transcripts for use in future research.
We may want to use some of the recordings of you in public presentations related to the research. There is a Media Records Release below that outlines several possible uses and asks for your specific consent to use these items in each way. We will not use any recordings or other identifiable information about you in any future presentation without your consent.
