Types of Initiatives

 

 
 

Brick-and-Mortar Institutions

  1. Are a physical structure explicitly designated as an educational institution where students receive face-to-face instruction from faculty and staff as well as peer-to-peer interaction. In some instances, brick-and-mortar institutions may have an online or digital component in addition to in-person instruction.

  2. Grant a certificate, diploma or qualification after successful completion of a course of study. This includes various levels of education. 

 
 

 
 

Short-Term Programs

  1. Provide participants with training or experience related to leadership, academics, their professional career, or another area of skill or capacity building.

  2. Are short-term, which is loosely defined as shorter than 12 months.

    • Programs shorter than 1 week will only be considered for this category if they do not qualify as a conference or meeting.

    • In some cases, short-term programs may be longer than 12 months (for example, an internship). Programs longer than 12 months will only be considered for this category if they do not qualify as a brick-and-mortar institution and they do not offer a formal degree.

  3. Take various forms and may be located within and across different spatial contexts, they must not also qualify as a brick-and-mortar institution to be included in this category.

 
 

 
 

Scholarships or Grants

  1. Provide at least partial financial support for an educational program or project, OR for a non-profit or business initiative that the scholarship/grant organization identifies as part of its mission to support young African leaders.

  2. Target Africans or people coming from “developing” contexts.

    • In the case that it does not specifically target Africans, African recipients should be listed on the website or alumni page.

  3. Require that applicants demonstrate “leadership” qualities or experience as part of the application process. Alternative terms listed in the inclusion for YLFD protocol can be used as well.

  4. To be considered a scholarship or grant, the case cannot be already listed in the YLFD database for another category.

 
 

Conferences or Meetings

  1. Are a thematic gathering that brings together individuals with shared interests for the purpose of participants sharing knowledge, networking, or making decisions based on their shared interests.

  2. Are events convened by an organization, institution, or other sponsoring body related to shared interests. Participants may be required to be members of the body or pay registration fees to attend.

  3. Are events usually less than one week and convenes on a regular basis (annually, quarterly, biennially, etc), though this is not a required condition for inclusion in this category.

  • Events longer than one week will be included in this category if they refer to themselves as one of the following common terms : Conference, Forum, Meeting, Symposium, Consortium


Networks

  1. Are a community connecting individuals and organizations who share similar interests, activities and missions related to education, leadership, youth, or development in Africa.

  2. Connect individuals and organizations from different geographical locations physically or virtually. Membership may be required.


Online Learning

  1. Facilitates knowledge-sharing, training or support for the development of leadership skillsusing online or digital technologies. This may include any of the following: 

    • Formal degrees or certification 

    • Workshops or mentorship services

    • Regular social media conversations(e.g.,Twitter chat, Facebook Live, YouTube videos, etc.)
